Gao’s works incorporate the imaginations of space, time, objects and memories, attempting to use paintings and materials to express the ineffable images and feelings of memory. In the process of creation, by combining everyday materials such as bedsheets, shirts, curtains, etc. with the canvas, Gao deliberately preserves their characteristics, thus presenting a dense, blurred and rough texture on the screen. The “Nostalgia” in her works not only refers to the one for the past, but also points to the future or the side of time, combining familiarity and intimacy, but also retaining the irrationality and unreality, which are derived from her personal fantasies and memories, as well as from multiple dimensions, such as literature, cinema, and history.

Ujazdowskie 22, Warsaw, PL (2024); Taking the Night Bus Home, SNAP, Shanghai, CN (2024); West Bund Art and Design Exhibition, West bund dome art Center, Shanghai, CN (2023); Adrift, ATTN Gallery, Guangzhou, CN (2023); Wall Hanging, Vestibule Gallery, Seattle, USA (2023); Zu Shang Wo, ACENTRIC SPACE, Shanghai, CN (2023); The Incorrigible drawing club, Ladies Drawing Club, EU (2023); no way to see inside for certain, Soil Gallery, Seattle, USA (2022); Dissolving Boundaries, Sand Point Gallery, Seattle, USA (2021); Still waters run deep, Sand Point Gallery, Seattle, USA (2020); notes from the unseen, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Seattle, USA (2020); Things behind the sun, Sand Point Gallery, Seattle, USA (2020); Open Studio, School of Visual Art, NY, USA (2019); Meany Center Art Exhibit, Meany Hall, Seattle, USA (2018); permanent collection, Husky Union Building, Seattle, USA (2018); SAVANNAH BECK + XIAOYI GAO two person show, Jacob Lawrence Gallery, Seattle, USA (2018)
